does 4 single non fused spurs on a ring comply ? there are 4 double sockets in a kitchen ring the spurs supply a washing machine a dishwasher a fridge and a freezer

Depends.

Is it spur after spur, or is each spur taken from a different socket?

If they're all from seperate sockets, they comply. If it's 2 or more unfused spurs from one socket, it doesn't comply.

Not quite as simple as that. Need to know cable sizes, fuse/MCB size etc.

However your in luck the IET made a mistake with BS7671:2008 and have released a correction if you go here and at bottom of correction is a lovely chart showing you exactly what you can do.
