Not in garden, but in house, how do you catch a bird to put it outside?

We let the cat feeder get low, so they clearly thought we were short of food, so brought us a bird. I grabbed the cat so she let the bird go, it seemed unharmed, but getting it out of the house again not so easy, this time went into the living room with patio doors, opened them wide, and it flew out, but the only other option seems to be let the cat catch it again.

I have customer, their cat loves finding frogs, bringing them back and then torturing them. I let the customer know and leave it to them to deal with it...

I've heard that if you open windows and pull the curtains out of the way, then just leave it alone in the room, doors closed, it'll fly out as soon as it's calmed down. If there are windows on two sides, close the curtains on one.

Running about trying to catch it, or flapping at it with a towel, will not help it to calm down.
