Not seen that before - battery clock

It's a cheap, clock module, running on a AAA battery. All the ones I; have seen before, go tick, tick, tick - with the second hand going around, in one second jerks. This one, makes steady progression, around the clock face. I know how the 'one second tick' ones work, but how does this work?

I have a wristwatch, battery with a smooth second hand movement. They do it via a much higher frequency crystal.

Our radio controlled wall clock in the kitchen also has a smooth sweep.
