Hi everyone

I've had an architect come round to draw up some initial plans as I feel I won't get the same service if I used an 'all in one' loft conversion company

He's come back to me stating the conversion will require SIX steel / RSJ beams?!

Is this normal?

I had several others around before settling with this architect and the most that was ever mentioned was 3 possibly 4 to support the chimney stack

Could someone here who's had a similar style conversion advise?

To help things along, I have a 3 bedroom victorian mid terrace, and the second dormer will be come across to the rear side addition of the property

Any help here would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

P.S. I posted this previously (in the 'Stairs & lofts section (//www.diynot.com/diy/threads/steels-for-l-shape-double-dormer-loft-conversion.434380/#ixzz3a6xoj21v) but was advised to try here as I may get more luck

It depends, but L-shaped dormers do present more complex structural propblems.

Can you post drawings?

I've not yet had the drawing back yet.

This was after an initial consultation and am still deciding whether to employ him for the entire work yet as I was quite taken back by this comment which is why I've asked for some advice on here.

Really, an architect is not best qualified to comment on the number of steels required - this is an SE's job once the plans are ready.
Unless we see a plan, it's not feasible to comment on the number of steels required.
