Number Plate Light

I have a vauxhall vectra 1.8 sxi on a 53 plate. I noticed the other night that whan the car is unlocked the number plate light will stay on indefinitely (I presume) and will only go off when I lock the car. It also comes on if I open the tailgate only. Surely this isn't supposed to happen because it would drain the battery after a time? Anybody had anything similar?

must be normal, my astra (07 reg) does it, but it does go out. But i have no idea why, unless its when the tailgate is up, in the dark it is now lit

It should come on when you press the boot unlock button for a minute or so. Gives you a bit of light at night so you can see what you're doing
