hi, my mates vw golfs oil light comes on when its engine starts to warm up(about 5 mins).he was told it was its oil pump which he changed, this helped for a while but now its back to lighting up again.he also had the switch changed.
any ideas guys?

A new oil pump will have helped but, the oil pressure does, to a certain degree, rely on the condition of the engine. If the big end, and the main bearing shells, are fairly worn, this will contribute to a low oil pressure, resulting in the oil light switch glowing because of the reduced pressure. Has the car done a high mileage? An oil change, with, possibly, a higher viscosity oil,and a new filter, might make a difference.

What golf is it?
When the pump was changed was the oil strainer cleaned out too?

There is more than one oil pressure switch on them, so highly likely you have got the wrong one.
Make sure it has a genuine filter too.
If you do change the oil again, put a bottle of the cheapest ATF fluid (pound shop / aldi etc )in and run the car for about 25 miles, this will clean everything through nicely before the oil change.

thanks guys.
its a p reg 1.4 golf 64,000 miles only.im not sure if the strainer was cleaned out.

 is that safe?

As long as it doesn't take it over the max mark on the dipstick
The ATF fluid has alot of detergents in it, which is great for a cheap effective engine flush.
Quite a well known oil flushing trick in the VW enhusiasts world.

The other one is steam cleaning the inside of your engine by sticking a small bore pipe onto the inlet manifold and putting the other end in a milk bottle full of water to get rid of carbon, but won't go into that now!

The switch, or switches depending on engine (AEX at a guess?) should be located on the top of the oil filter housing. Check just under the spade terminal for a coloured plastic ring. You need to change the sender with the same colour one (different colours for different pressures). GSF do them for around a fiver each, and probably worth changing them both (if it has the 2!)
May also be worth getting the oil pressure checked just to rule out any low pressure problems and make sure the pump has been put in right!
