I need to join a new 22mm copper pipe to an incoming main which has got written on it - Qualplast 1972 1/2". It is a black plastic pipe. The o.d of the pipe is just under an inch. This implies a fairly large wall thickness, assuming the internal diameter is 1/2".

Have I got this right?

Also, what fitting can I use to join to 22mm copper? At the moment there's a imperial compression stopcock, reducing to 15mm. And do I need an insert into the black pipe?

There are a few you can use.
Go to Plasson website and i think 7418 metric to imperial is the fitting you need ?

Thanks for that.

Do I need an insert into the black pipe? Would I be right in thinking that if I remove the compression stopcock, then there would be an insert in the pipe already?
