I have an old Georgian cottage with a Victorain extension on the back which is a kitchen and bathroom. It has a very uneven concrete floor which had a vinyl covering, I have stripped this up as it was holdinging in the damp and pushing it out to the walls where it was then rising up through the old stones staining the walls. The floor is now drying out as are the walls but I'm looking for advice as to what I can do to the floor to level it out and give a nicer finish but at the same time letting it 'breath'

Vinyl floor coverings are notorious for trapping moisture so it's hardly surprising what you found.

I'm not convinced on the "holding in the damp and pushing it up the walls" diagnosis though. Given the present weather, the time of the year and the fact that the vinyl floor covering has now gone, then it's hardly surprising things are drying out.

I'd bite the bullet and dig out the old floor and lay a new one complete with insulation and dpm.

The walls need dealing with as a separate issue.

Thanks for that but what would you recommend for the walls as there are so many conflicting theories.
