The way I avoid those problems is to lubricate the thread with silicone grease first and then start them by hand whilst watching from the side to ensure they are at the correct angle.
Sure I have sometimes cross threaded them but by only using hand pressure that does not damage the threads. I just start again being more careful to optically align the threads.
