Old pipes

Although most of my DHW & CH installation is made of copper pipes, I have noticed that the mains water pipe coming into my house as well as a few other pipes are of a uniform dark brown color (no it's not paint).

Is this aging copper or could it be some other material like lead? The house was built in the 50s.

Rub it down with steel wool then you will see.
