We have just moved house, there was an old wood burner in lounge,or so we thought, but we have never seen anything like it, the property has no mains gas, but has oil fired central heating in the cupboard next to fire is a strange looking device with a plug fitted to it, various copper pipes and what looks like a large rubber tube heading towards fire. Could some one look at photos and tell me what we are looking at please

Solid fuel fire for auxillary heating of hot water tank.

May or may not still be connected/full of water.

Suggest you get a HETAS bod ( with H004 Wet Appliance qualification) to have a look at it before you think of ever lighting a fire there!

Thanks polestar, we want to take it out and have a new multi fuel stove installed. So is there a good chance the back boiler is still in place behind fire. Cold water tank in loft is disconnected and there is no hot water tank anymore

Buy a multi fuel stove with a back boiler, and you can then remove the back boiler you have and sell it for scrap. They are a very heavy copper and worth about £50 scrap.I have a clearview stove with back boiler and they are great for hot water and running a few radiators.
