How is it a lie?
Are you suggesting they did not have covid, or that they did not die?
What they actually say is people who die within 28days of a positive test for covid. They also still monitor the 60 odd day numbers too. Possibly because some take longer than 28 to die. That is really surprising isn't it.
Best thing I heard in this area was from a family who may well be disbelievers. Some one in it had COPD so they insisted they died of that. Well reported in the press. Fact of life. They had caught covid and that plus COPD is really bad news. It's a condition that people can live with for a very long time. Flu would probably be bad news too.
Another aspect. Some one with covid can also catch pneumonia just because they caught it. What caused them to die?
Covid stresses a number of things. If that causes some problem with an organ that isn't functioning as well as it should and they die what caused that? Strokes are even possible - induced by covid. Kidneys and livers can also be a problem for some.
The term is underlying problems. In many cases people wont even know they have them.

Death is not always recorded as the thing that ultimately kills us.
You can suffer t2 diabetes for years, but heart or kidney failure might actually kill you, or even gangrene.
No woman dies of cancer in the breast, it's the secondary cancers that kill.
Smoking doesn't kill. It's the heart attack or lung cancer that does
You might become blind,. But that won't kill you. Stumbling and falling will though.
Once we get past 65, the most common cause of death is falling. But what causes the falling? Falling is not a disease.
COVID contributes to deaths, maybe some people have copd, or lung cancer or Alzheimer's, or other comorbidities related to obesity, some people mighty just collapse, fall, because of COVID sapping their energy. Ultimately, catching COVID speeds up death.
Ignore it at your peril.

According to BBC, several days ago, it was about 10,000 confirmed cases, with an estimate for the actual number to be double that.
