one coat paint & undercoat

hi

i need to paint a brand new pine door white.

if i use one coat paint do i still need to use undercoat first?

No...but you do need to use knotting and primer first...its crutial.

Once primed then lightly sand it to remove the 'furing' of the grain, then you casn use either traditional undercoat and gloss, two coats of satin/eggshell finish.....or the one coat stuff....but be aware, it will probably need two coats.

Decorators dont really use one coat paints as they dont always do the job...and the finish isnt as superior as a traditional gloss.

If it was me I would go for the traditional stuff.

But whatever you decide....knot and prime first or you will end up with loads of brown ring marks on your door in a few months time.

I've just found these . You just need to be patient with the drying time, but my test piece is looking promising (just a scrap of pine wood). It's a 4 coat process, with linseed oil being the main component. Does nice thin coats, and hands, brushes, clothes etc just clean up with a bit of soap and water.

Maintenance requirements are recoat in 7 years if outside.
