This may sound like a daft question, but when adding an open fireplace (ie with a grate, not a stove) where there is currently no fireplace and no chimney, is it possible to go from the throat onto a metal flue, such as you would use when installing a stove? That is, build a chimney breast inside the room, but go up inside it, and out, with a twin-walled flue rather than building a masonry chimney? If so, what would be the components to make the connection?

Thanks
Richard

But if you're going to the effort of building a chimney inside the room, why add a twin wall system as well. Why not go up into the loft space, and then use the twin wall system from there. You could just cement the flue liner into the top of the new chimney, and then flaunch the two together.

There isn't a loft space, it's a single storey room with a flat roof. If I were fitting a stove (which is still an option), I'd build the shell of a chimney breast and take a metal flue up inside it, and through the roof. I was wondering if I could take a similar approach with an open fire.

I suppose I could build an orthodox chimney to ceiling height, then do as you suggest.

Subsequent reading suggests that I might need a wider flue for an open fire, than for a stove, so this might not work.

Ahh, hadn't thought about the flue dimension; but I've seen brick flues that are just 10" square, so not sure what you'd need.

Now having said all that, you do realise just how innefficient a standard chimney is; so it begs the question of why you want to do it. On reflection, I'm not sure yy're going in the right direction.

You mean by having an open fire rather than a stove? Purely for aesthetic reasons. It will be used occasionally, I already have a stove in another room, and I think an open fire with a nice fireplace will suit this room better.
