Hi all I have an optima xm years old and have recently moved back into my property after evicting the previous Tennent, i have been doing a lot of building repairs due to the damage left and eventually noticed that there are 2 red lights on my control panel, i removed the front panel and tested the battery and its dead. so purchased a new battery and the same 2 red lights are there.
I have tries to reset the code but nothing works when i press the buttons, i enter the engineers code and nothing, when i switch off the mains the bell sings loudly and i have to enter my code to stop it but the 2 red lights are there and when i enter my code to set the alarm theres nothing, i did bump into an alarm guy in a supermarket and picked his brains and he said that theres a battery in there somewhere about a watch battery size to check that. well i cant see one and i cant find a diagram on line to see where it could be, i think the previous tenent tried to change the code and done something, any ideas would be welcome. thanks.

So called alarm guy is spouting ****e ….two things to check ….battery charging resistor is damaged …..did you say with the new battery fitted when you turn off the power the control panel goes dead ? If so then either a fuse has blown on the control panel or the resistor is burnt out …

Red arrow ….fuse
Green arrow resistor behind keypad ( onboard panel )

struggle to understand questioning an alarm guy in a supermarket and expecting a reasonable answer.

As for the watch battery dont believe your panel has one from memory, in some panels used to maintain time and date and programming.

As mentioned above check the resistor and the fuse.

sparkymarka thanks for the advise i was hoping you would reply as looking at your other suggestions it seems you know what your on about. i cant be doing anything with electric through the week as the mrs works online from home and if i go switching the electric off for any reason it wont be the outside box that be ringing but will have a look at your suggestions as soon as i can. will keep you posted.
secureiam i cant see why you are struggling to understand that i asked an alarm guy in a supermarket, or a church, or a rugby game or any where else for that matter.
if something dont work and it needs to be fixed, you ask someone who is in the know, where ever they are.
i dont want it to sound like im having a pop at you but if your car breaks down, you call a mechanic, correct, but thanks for your reply

no worries.

I personally wouldn't ask them when I wasn't near the problem or it was outside their working hours.
main reason nothing can be done or confirmed.

People phone us up all the time when they are not on site and without full accurate descriptions of an issue it can be very difficult to be certain.

Two red lights doesn't mean a lot, without knowing which two, probably power and tamper, but guessing.

As for their response, it sounds like they either didn't know or trying to get rid of you with something you could check when you returned home, I suspect it could be the latter as you approached them in their personal time and space.

On this panel without a third party protection circuit, once the battery is compromised (very low for any length of time) the burnout occurs of the resistor believe there are a few images of that on this site.

This range of panels also does not always respond if the tamper isn't closed. So you can open the panel type in the user code and the panel silences and the nothing else appears to work until the tamper is closed again.

Also certain light light up depending on where you are within the system, and i would have to refresh my memory as to what the lights men wrt to to say engineers mode for example.

This panel and its successors are no longer available as new panels so you may need to look at an equivalent replacement.

I would take a picture of the bell wiring (and other wiring) at the panel and a picture of the bell box in use, this maybe come critical it the unit needs replacing.

Apologies if I seemed harsh, just seemed strange to me to expect someone to give answer as your were passing.
