Options for small landing space with painted stairs?

I ripped up the carpet on the stairs which I'm going to sand & paint. However the top of the stairs is awkward (large gaps & uneven). The floor boards aren't particularly nice to look at.

I'm not sure what to do to give a decent finish. Any ideas guys?
