Painting stairs

Hi,

We've got cats who have made a bit of a mess of the carpet on the stairs and I'm thinking about pulling the carpet up and painting them. However, I really can't be bothered to sand them. Is there any way of avoiding sanding them before I paint them or would you advise against this corner-cutting?

Why not save a bit more effort and just paint the carpet?
