An electrician replaced an outside light yesterday. He had trouble getting the old corroded one off and it was raining but I’m not sure I’m happy with the wiring. Thoughts please. 31A64B84-3E6A-4143-A780-AF196489B44F.jpegE9698EA6-D123-430A-9044-AD429FCEB54D.jpeg

I'm no electrician but what a sh!tshow. Couldn't even be bothered to peel the label off. Case half open. Dubious seal through the hole. Wire pointing downwards so will take drips into the house. After going through the hassle of finding someone, getting them to call back/turn up and then being left with this, it is not surprising that many folk take on DIY - not just a money issue.

Thanks. I’ve a tendency to be a bit pedantic so wanted to check.

It looks like he hasn't even bothered putting the cover on properly. And what is with the electrical tape around the supply cable?

I am not even sure that the box is sitting tight to the wall.

Can you take photos showing the new light fitting as well?

F977EACC-BADC-415B-9D34-33A4981812A4.jpeg Thanks. This is as close as I can get. It’s such a mess I don’t even know how the wiring can be fixed.

That is a complete botch job. The tape, the lack of a drip loop, the box fixing, the lid of the box not fitted - likely more on closer inspection. It will probably not work for long.

He’s come back to put a different box on but let’s face it he’s cut the wire too short and made a mess of it. It’s a hideous light too. To fix it it would need to go right back to the switch in house apparently. God I hate workmen

Looks like the supply cable was stripped back to the brickwork, which is why he's taped it up (not very well). Don't know why there's half a red plug behind the box.
I would have fitted the box over the cable, rear entry, with a good blob of silicone to seal. Also used an IP65 box.

one question that isn't answered -
How much did it cost and what was he asked to do?

If he was paid a minimal amount that didn't include rewiring and the client wanted "just the light swapped"
Then the fault is with the client being cheap.

I might have chosen a different box with rear entry if it would work.

The client certainly didn’t want cheap. That’s what he supplied. Money wasn’t a factor. He has come back and tidied it up to an acceptable level. Still a hideous light though.

Yes we need new pictures.

The old box would be full of water very quickly so I'd like to see what the new one looks like and what he did with the cable.
