Couple of weeks ago made my first post about an outside socket which is damaged. I wanted to replace it (its on its own circuit 16A MCB under RCD protection in CU so believe that is all ok). I asked about the IP rating I needed and was told IP56 would be the minimum.

Now I am in posession of my socket - I blame the olympics for not having done it sooner! but just wanted to ask about the connection outside. Presently the 2.5 T&E just runs through the wall and takes a bend into the bottom of the socket mastic'ed at the hole etc both socket and wall end. I was just wondering if this is ok? Is it ok to just have T&E exposed to elements? or should some other sort of cable be used? Now that I'm about to replace it I may as well change it if this is no good or not the norm.

I also notice that this is the same on a security light I have at the front. I have no reason to doubt this but was just surprised thats all - advice welcome.

you can get a plastic cable gland that seals the cable - better than mastic

you can also get a conduit connector which is even better as you should run the cable in conduit through the wall to prevent snagging and chafing.

ordinary T&E should not be exposed to sunlight.

JohnD if you are still there I can find a cable gland, in Screwfix but not a conduit connector are these basically conduits to run the cable in from the hole in the wall to the socket?

If I were to come straight into the back of the new socket presumably I would not bother with either of these? Take your point about conduit through the wall though will check this and if there isn't one will pull old cable back and put one in.

Thanks again
