First the thermostat light was coming on but no heat so I ordered a new element. But when the element arrived, the oven had gone completely dead, not even the thermostat light and this even before attempting to install the element. Ideas appreciated...

Have you switched off the power since?
Some ovens won't fire up unless the clock is set, or at least, not flashing.
