over flowing stand pipe on washing machine

My daughter has just moved into a new house and i have been round to plumb her washing machine in but has anyone any ideas why when the machine is emptying their is an over flow up over the stand pipe of soap suds, the stand pipe has a u-bend at the bottom and then rigged into the sink drainage system, i have removed both u-bends from the washer and sink to make sure both are clear which they are now but the problem of the over flow is still happening. Any ideas would be most appreciated

make sure the pipe is only down 3 /4 inches any
more will cause flooding.
