Overboard 12x8 shed

Used to be a site hut and s/h when brought 30 years ago, painted in gloss white which is peeling on sun facing sides and also seeing quite a few rotten pieces of the tongue and groove wood which would be a pain to replace and am considering overboarding, what do you think would be best, ply but then it would still need paint/waterproofing every couple of years or the plastic coated box profile like on warehouses and modern builds.
i think cost wise they will be about the same but no further maintenance with the steel cladding, would i need battens first or could i attach straight to the shed? size is 12x8

Thank You gents, i decided to go with upvc 100mm open V cladding which looks as though it will do the job although i had not considered it until Harry's post, it will be easier to work with and slightly cheaper than metal cladding although it will be a bundle of cash once all the corners, joins,screws etc are thrown in but still cheaper than a new shed of the same quality.
 
Had a google and most companies say they are not to be used for cladding but i will email the the Co i have seen and ask, maybe something to do with resistance to UV although it seems it is used a lot for bathroom walls, ceilings etc.

It's primary use, is for soffits, outdoors - You have a fascia, upon which the gutter is fixed, then between the fascia, and the wall, you have the soffit. You will see the same material installed as soffit, on hundreds of houses. Usually, it is cut into short peaces, so the lines run from fascia, to the wall, rather than being used length ways. Apart from looking better, placed that way, it is a more economical way to use it. It's secondary purpose, is indoors, in bathrooms as you suggest, it can even be made use of for bath panels.
 
After getting conflicting answers from retailers regarding using soffit boards i am going to use upvc shiplap cladding which whilst expensive to do the shed i will not have to replace a few years down the line, a question though should i use a membrane over the existing wood or not bother? as the cladding will have a 1 inch air gap top and bottom due to the battens although i will use stainless cladding pins for the boards,
Will decking 4.5x50 screws be ok to fix the battens although i will use stainless cladding pins for the boards
