First confirm the overflow is due to the valve allowing the cistern to overfill. Lift up the float and see that the valve closes fully.
The arm that has the float on the end of it may have an adjustable screw in it at the opposite end to the float. Turn the screw out to lengthen it. This screw is what contacts the the valve to close it when the water level is correct.
Alternatively you may need to adjust the position of the float on the end of the arm (depending on the type of float valve you have). Lowering the float will close the valve sooner etc.
Failing that you may need to replace the valve diaphragm - it may be punctured/perished.
Or replace the entire float valve assembly - you will still need to adjust it as above!
