Is there an authority? a think tank?

I hate things double wrapped, or pots of stuff with a convex bottom !!! almost legal theft in my book !!

Who's on this?

BBC Watchdog and Which? magazine have both been championing the cause for some time now.

Yes there is an authority. Its called the Environment Agency.

Companies must report how much packaging they use each year in terms of plastic, card/paper, wood metal, etc, and an deviation above 10% from the previous year must be explained.

Packaging is becoming more efficient, with less and less on many items. A lot of it is driven by the manufacturers themselves, as they force their packaging suppliers to provide packaging with less and less material.

Even easter eggs have less packaging than they used to.

They have to report to organisiations such as Valpak, but it is the EA that prosecutes if they do not report.

I hate over-packaging. As a bathroom fitter I deal with it every day and it drives me insane. Two packs of screws within a bag and then when you open them the screws are cellotaped together. Shed loads of polystyrene which cant be recycled and makes a mess. Protective plastics on baths and units and chrome wastes which is sometimes really difficult to remove.

The other day I had delivered 3 boxes of ceramic tiles, in a box, wrapped in bubble wrap, within another box and then taped all over. Half the tiles in each package were smashed beyond use.

It's nothing new...Spangles with a dimple,Polos with a hole,Aero full of bubbles. And I've noticed with silicone tubes the plunger seems to get higher in the tube each year.

Yes I have noticed the silicone tubes, especially when I buy those cheap 'No Nails' equivalents. They only have half the contents.

I bought a new handbrake cable for my car last week. It's about a metre and a half long, but rolled up in a plastic bag about 14"by 14". Bloody thing arrived via courier in a box 500mm x 500mm x 500mm. The handbrake cable was lying in the bottom of the box, underneath loads of bubble wrap.

Libby, I reckon if they had sent it in a pizza box, it would have arrived undamaged (specially if it had a pizza on top, but the pizza would have been cold)
Anyway, I'm sure they could find better (and smaller) packaging. (at least the kids had fun playing with the bubble wrap, they'd rather play with that than their expensive crap from Toys R Us,, Roll on Christmas)
