paint it white or leave it

the kichen walls are an orangey colour and are changing to a yellow, the boss of the house tells me i should emulsion the walls white first before covering with yellow err so thats 2 coats of white then 2 or 3 of yellow
is she wrong for the first time in her life and should i just slap up the yellow as i cant see the point in doing what she says

Afraid she may well be right lol. White is a good undercoat for some yellows. Usually one coat of white might kill the orange and you'll be suprised how easily the yellow covers and might only need one coat
But some of the modern 'zingy yellows' might need two, sometimes more.[/u]

white is good for a base coat but i dont see the point myself me myself would just give it 3 coats of yellow if it didnt cover in 2 coats no point in giving it 2 coats of white then 2 coats of yellow. carl

Thats ok carl but as I mentioned there are yellows (reds,greens too) that will not cover in two coats, mainly Dulux colours, capricorn (yellow) or willow (green-ish) which if viewed on a trade card will have an asterisk which denotes extra coats required in other words they can't formulate the colour right (chromate problem) soo at least 3 coats required. The other prob is that dulux retail omit the asterisk and leave the diy'r to put 4/5 coats on .

What I was trying to put over is that 2 coats of yellow over an orange colour would not look as good as one coat of white and one coat of the yellow.....

Should have said hash # insteead of asterisk.. anybody bovered lol

Thanks guys, ive done a couple of test squares in one ive done 3 coats of the dulux tough matt sunkissed yellow over the orange and it still looks like it neeeds another coat ! and the other square ive done two coats of yellow over one coat of white so far, so i may do three of yellow and two of white. god the kitchen will be half the size with all those layers

that sounds like too much to me mate, one white and two yellow would be plenty. i honestly think you'd get away with two yellow if you used trade paint
