Paint over a red tarmac drive

I've moved into a house with a very large red tarmac drive. I'd like to tone down the colour and preferably change it to something less 'flashy' ie. black or grey.

Does anyone know the best way to go about this and is there a specialisst paint for this job???

B & Q sell large tubs of Tarmac paint, its water based but looks ok when its done. Have to work quick so as not to get stripes on the drive.
