Paint remover for......

Will regular paint remover not work? I have a similar problem, have to remove water-based top coat and the coats underneath are old oil based gloss. Want them all gone. I'm hoping a regular paint remover will do the job.
Does anyone have a recommendation of one as Nitromors seems to get bad reviews nowadays?
