Painting a varnished exterior door.

Morning all,

Our front door is in dire need of attention before the winter arrives, we don't like the varnished finish so are going to go for gloss paint and replace the door furniture.

Clearly I've got a fair bit of prep to do first but can someone please advise what type of primer I should use before applying undercoat?

Also, what would you recommend as a suitable finish for the threshold which is currently painted black?

Many thanks, DM.

I'd really appreciate advice on what type of primer to use on this ^ prior to undercoat and gloss. Thanks.

I'd recommend thorough sanding to remove as much of the varnish as possible, followed by an aluminium primer to prevent any woodstain beleeding through, followed by an oil based undercoat (x2) and topcoat.

Dulux Weathershield or Leyland Trugard syetems are both good.
