I want to paint the thing so the finish is similar to a guilt picture frame. I'm sure it's not as simple as buying an aerosol can and spraying it. It is painted white at the moment, will I need a special primer to stop any reactions? what brand of aerosol is best?

The frames normally have rusty red base, with a gold applied over the top. The gold is then abraded back to allow some of the red to show through.

Not something I have done before but I guess that a light sand of the white, followed by red oxide car spray will suffice as the base. You could then use one of the polyvine metallic paints and after a few days use webrax or wirewool to scratch through it.

Others might have better suggestions.
