Painting hinges

Here's one possibly for the older painters, who served proper apprenticeships where detail meant everything.

If painting inside a room, say the door is green and the frame is white, what colour should the hinge 'barrel' be?

Typically, the answer would be either, but I'm guessing for the sake of consistency there may be some old unwritten outdated rule on it.

Agree with both replies, but leaving them unpainted is definitely the 'written' rule.
