I want to repaint my metal front door. The existing blue paint is faded but is not flaky or cracking anywhere so I thought I'd just rub down and paint with an exterior gloss.

I had a look online and a lot of sites say that, if it's been painted with latex based paint before, not use repaint with oil based. Using the test the site suggested (rub with meths and see if paint transfers to cloth) suggests my door was painted with latex. Not really sure what "latex" paint is, I think it's a US term, but I think gloss is oil based isn't it so my plan for a rub down and repaint in gloss isn't going to work then?

Can anyone advise what paint I should be using?

thanks

Dave

Rub down, Undercoat in colour that will suit the topcoat. When dry rub down with wet n dry using water. Clean off and dry. Apply two coats of a thinned oil based gloss of your chosen colour.
