We have just had our lounge re-plastered and new coving put up.
Please can anyone advise how I should prepare the coving before painting with gloss? would a thinned down paint be practical - in which case, what sort of paint and how thinned down - with water?

Thanks in advance

Why are you painting it with gloss?

I thought it would look nice! - I want it in a different colour than the ceiling (white emulsion) and a slightly darker colour than the wallpaper (apricot)

If you think gloss is wrong, please let me know - Thanks!

Its all down to personal choice..but the surface of the coving will have to be super smooth and flat otherwise the gloss will highlight every single surface deviation and texture..plus it might discolour

Have you considered vinyl silk or softsheen instead...easier to work with too

But if you want to go ahead with the gloss then id say give it a coat of thinned out emulsion..then a rub down with fine grade abrasive paper...then a couple of undercoats, then your gloss...rubbing down between each coat.

I undercoat with a combined primer/undercoat, and topcoat with 2 lots of Satinwood

Might not be textbook but it works fine for me
