Painting over flaked paint

Hi

can someone advise me on the best way to even up a wall that needs to be painted. Where the previous tiles have been removed it has flaked off some of the emulsion here and there. It's an area of only 12'' x 16'' so doesn't really warrant re-plastering but obviously I need it to blend in with the rest of the wall without any highs or lows.

Is it best to use a filler and then lightly rub it down or maybe a one coat plaster?

Sounds like a simple filler job to me.
If the paint is flaking then some Zinsser peel stop may help but from what you say it it sounds as if the tile adhesive has just pulled the emulsion off so a little polyfilla or whatever will do the job just fine.

Let it dry, sand it down and apply a mist coat (very dilute emulsion) to help seal it - you will then be able to see if you need to fill it again but if all looks good then away you go with your finish paint.

Hi Guys,

Filler will do a decent job if it is only over this sort of size space. However for the best job possible a coat of plaster would be the best option. Plaster will give an all round neater finish.

If you do choose to just use filler then like steve said you should sand down and then apply a mist coat too.

OK, not arguing but questioning - why plaster over such a small area given that the problem is only the thickness of paint that has lifted ?

I am not a fully trained decorator but have earned my living doing it along with many other aspects of the building trade for about 25 years so have some experience, and to my mind it would be harder to patch with plaster than filler.
