Painting over preciously stained timber

Hi,

I have just purchased a house that has the exterior walls made of rough sawn timber that has been stained. I want to paint these walls. It is not possible to sand them first. Can I do this?

It sounds like the timber is forming an integral part of the property, if so I would'nt recommend painting it at all.
