Hi,

I've got an old shed which is going to be taken apart and reconsituted into a kids play house. At the moment it's got a (faded) light brown wood stain on it, but I'd like to paint a lighter colour. I've got two questions about the practicalities of this.....

1. What would I need to use to prime the surface so that a water-based paint would be okay to use? Given the large amount of surface area, I don't want to spend a fortune on stain block-type products. Would an oil-based undercoat be okay?

2. I've got most of a large tin of exterior masonry paint left. Would this be okay to use on wood, or is there a good reason why it wouldn't be suitable?

Thanks in advance for any help.

If you use masonary paint on old stained then i would give one year then it would start falling off. Best thing to do is use is 'dulux trade weathershield opaque finish' in oil based. It is availible in 600 solid colours. Though, if there is any bare wood then it needs to be sealed with 'weathershield preservative basecoat' prior to overcoating with 'dulux trade weathershield opaque finish'. The reason i advize oil based is cos water based products allow any in-grained (in the old wood) outdoor organic green growth to grow through water based, but this does not happen with oil base.

Yeh id go down the line of an opaque finish too..if the stuff on it now is waterbased and not creosote then you could also use Sadolin supadec
