Painting over sticky tape?!

Having just moved into a new home, I am delighted to find that the previous tenants for some reason, have left the back of brown sticky tape all over one of my walls. I've tried to get this off just by picking at it, with no success (I don't wanna press to hard incase I damaged the paint beneath)...is it possible to simply paint over it? And if so, will I need a particular type of paint?

Do you mean the brown parcel tape? Try some white spirit on a rag this may remove it.

nail varnish remover should do the trick
