painting over varnish????????

can anybody tell me the best way to cover varnished wood? have read all sorts and really not sure which advice is best. can u use an emulsion as primer then apply satin wood, or do u need to buy a specific type.
please help :confused:

I am assuming that you do not intend to remove the old varnish and that the wood you are painting is internal, that being the case the next best thing to do is clean and lightly sand the wood and apply a coat of oil based undercoat when dry this can be over coated with Satinwood. (best to try a trial area first especially if the varnish already on is of an unknown type)

I have tried emulsion as a primer in the past with disastrous results so suggest the customer steers well clear.
