Painting Plasterboard

Hi
I have recently moved into my first house I have started to strip the walls as I want to paint them but they have not been skimmed and the quallity of the walls are not that great does any one have any ideas or tips for prepping them cheaply for painting and improving the surface

Fill and smooth off the deepest dents in the plasterboard and give the whole wall a coating of 50/50 solution water and paint emulsion. Buy the thickest backing paper you can get your hands on and stick this on the wall. You can now paint this after giving it another coating of the 50/50 solution. (NB Make sure you do a good job of hanging the backing paper and making the joins as good as possible or they will stick out like a sore thumb.):cool:
