Could anyone advise me which paint is best to use to paint wooden stair treads

Gloss. Anything less shiny will get dirty.

I had considered using gloss, but was scared that this might be a little slippery with just socks on. Is there a product that has some friction properties within it?

No. As soon as you get grip - you get dirt sticking. Better wear slippers.

Be scared... be very sscared if you paint them all over. WATCO make anti slip stuff- bit industrial tho`.
