Painting Steel Lintel

The paint is flaking off the steel lintel above my garage door, so I'm planning to strip it completely and repaint.

I assume the lintel is steel and there are no signs of rust on the areas where the paint has already come off.

What is the best paint for this?

Any metal paint rated for exterior use. Preferably with some sort of rust inhibitor built in.

Short answer: Hammerite.

Wire brush to get any loose stuff off that may not have flaked off yet.

Edit: if the lintel is galvanised. That would explain the flakey paint and lack of rust.
In which case first use a primer suited for galvanised metal.
