Hi all,

Have just completed the main structure of a rear extension where the flat roof is a balcony with all the relevant steel supports in place. Thing is customer has changed her mind and now wants concrete slabs laid on top of the parapet at the perimeter of the roof/balcony - all fine but ....

Thing is the parapet is not masonary and is structured from timber so question is a solution for the best fixing of the slabs to the timber plate and thereby maintaing a weatherproof seal We would be fixing the slabs onto a continuous DPC without doubt.

I have a few ideas but need further input please, maybe heres a ready made stainless fixing system just for this ?

Mnay thanks :D

Can't you talk her out of it?
Not saying it can't be done but fixing masonry on to timber framing is
not the normal way. There will be a higher probability of things going wrong, in which case she will hold you liable.
Has she asked her architect/plan drawer about this? Let him come up
with a detail and then it absolves you of any responsibility. As builder you will have enough to do without coming up with a novel design.

Tony is right in everything he has said, but if you get backed into a corner.
No matter whether studwork is solid or cavity built, or what the cladding is to stud work nail with galv nails stainless steel Exmet to width required all round perimeter, spread thin bed s&c to cover exmet, bed keyed DPC, bed either once or twice weathered throated copings. Take cladding up to copings and run mastic seal along internal angle.

The might be Planning implications here? Worth checking, could give you a get-out as well as avoiding risk for the homeowner.

Sorry for the late reply and thanks to all who posted.

There is no plan, no specification or drawings and yes i know you think im crazy but it is a well paying contract. I have pointed out all the drawbacks to her request and have also stated I will not be accepting liability if the installation should fail. This has been done in writing and I have got a reply from her agreeing to this.

The ideas posted are very useful so thanks to all
