Help please

I'm in the process of installing a parquet herringbone bone design with a two block border around the outside unfortunately my walls are not straight what is the best way around this problem ? Should I just make the border blocks follow the lines of the wall

Thanks :|

you need to find a decent brickie with a sprit level   dont bother looking in the yellow pages ! look in your local bookies    .... just kidding

We encounter this frequently, it seems no wall in the UK is straight.

If you have already started laying the pattern then you have to decide what looks better: a straight two block border (following the wall) or a straight pattern (where the block border will have to be adjusted - tapered).

Also remember, most times the border will be "hidden" underneath furniture.

thanks you for your response.

I have not starting laying as yet. if i follow the wall then i cant not use a plunge Saw for speed and accuracy, if i do a straight border i can use the plunge saw but i need to cut the blocks down is that right

There are plunge saws around that can go to 2cm from the walls (Festool).

I would have a "dry-run" with the pattern before you decide what to do with the border. All depends on the size and shape of the room. Don't let a none straight wall dictate the look of the pattern - you might end up with a design floor that just doesn't look right (not straight when you're looking at a focal point in the room)

The room is a rectangle, had a dry run already but not to sure how to measure up for the border?

Im keeping the existing skirting border and adding beading to hie the expansion gap, should i just get the perfectly straight border as close to the wall as possible and just cut out some skirt form the bottom for expansion if you know what i mean ?

How wide is your room (and how large/small are your wood blocks for the pattern)?

The room is 3m by 5m

The blocks are 70mm x 250mm x 20mm tongne and grove

The same blocks being used for the herringbone are being used for the border

Based on this I would keep the border a firm two blocks. Presumably it's one (or both) longer wall that's out? Tapering a border over that length wouldn't look good, where the pattern being cut "askew" to cope with the none-straight wall will hardly be noticeable.
