Hello all

After some advice please....

Scenario:

I live in a semi-detached house. Between my garden and the immediate neighbours is a small (dwarf) brick wall. This wall is the width of a brick. The centre of the wall is in line with the dividing line between the houses so, in effect, half of the wall sits on my side and half in the neighbours.

I had planned to put up a small fence on my side with the posts being attached to my side of the small wall. None of the proposed fence will encroach on the neighbours garden but the fixings will be in the shared wall.

Is there any problem with this?

Not sure whether I need any permission etc.

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks,

B

The fence and wall will almost certainly blow over in the next high wind. Put your posts into the ground.

jeds- The posts will be in the ground and concreted in. However, for extra strength, I wanted to attach the upper part of the posts to the wall using suitable fixings hence my query.

I wouldn't. Brick walls are strong in compression but very weak in tension and mortar is very brittle. A fence panel is like a sail - it will flex the posts much more than you think in wind. Any lateral flexing on a small brick wall will end in failure eventually.

Thanks for the good advice.

So you suggest I just ensure that the posts are concreted in at the base (in the ground) and not fixed in any way to the wall?

If so, do I need to do anything about the fact that I will need to dig down to the wall foundations in certain places where the posts will be on my side?

Thanks again,

B

Your talking about the little wall that separates your front garden from your neighbour's right? If it falls down, just rebuild it. That will be cheaper than 'doing' anything else!!
