Hi. We do our own pat testing of both our own stuff, and second hand electrical equipment via charity shops. (Although the cheap imports make this less economic now - why buy a second hand kettle when the supermarkets sell them for a fiver?)

Anyway, we use the very basic Seaward 50. Cheap and very easy to use. Needs calibrating once a year (£45 via a local place), runs off batteries (avoid mains ones - seriously, the extra faff is enormous)

We've had two in use for 3 years, no problems. Also does a basic socket test which can be handy if you're not sure if a socket is live or wired right.

Downsides: They can't do proper readings and have defaults built in. This means they can't test anything with a high earth impedence such as an extension lead. There's no automatic printout or inventory as with more expensive machines, so you handwrite the labels - but for what you describe that sounds fine.

As for testing, you can be deemed competent by doing an online course too if you have sufficient background experience. At least one website does a dvd with online course for around £50. However, a proper face to face course is undoubtably more thorough.

Just a thought

If you go to a proper course, with real people, you could aks your tutor what he would recommend..

Depending on how many appliances you intend to PAT, it may be worth investing in a tester which stores the results for download later.
I use a Megger PAT4/DVF which stores results for download to a PC, although may be a bit out of your price range.

was speaking to a council rental officer while at a landlords property. tell me that by end of year pat testing for all rental properties will be legal even if its only electric hob, cooker, fridge and washing washine???
