Hi

I’m installing a bi fold patio door in replacement for a window, we have a cavity wall 1966 build house. Inside wall has a concrete lintel but nothing on the exterior leaf
Should I just put a catnic ccs / single leaf lintel in or is it best to put a cavity wall lintel?

Patio door is 2140
Window is 2360
So we will be bricking up around 200mm

I’ve worked out a lintel 2.5m or above would be plenty for the overhang onto the brick either side

Many thanks
Elliott

You can cut out below a window and fit a window to the floor or a door/doors. Either way, that will need to obtain a FENSA certificate or building regs. If you wish to touch the lintel, or do lintel work, you will need building regs and building regs will want a copy of your structural engineers calculations and the structural engineers calculation will specify lintel, material, bearing etc..

If the internal lintel is fine, just put a standard single leaf tray lintel in on the outer leaf. No calcs or b/regs required.

Don't forget the cavity tray.

You'll need b/regs approval for the new doorset fitting, plus for forming the lower opening and installing DPC up the jambs and dealing with the threshold. This is not covered under any Competent Persons scheme.

So if it just put a single leaf lintel in myself onto the outside leaf will I still need building regs or am I good to carry on?
Thanks

ok thanks for the info… am I good to install if just install a single leaf and fit the doors or should I get building regs and a professional to fit?

If you know what to do, then go for it.

Lots of people do this type of work themselves without making an application. The issue would be if you come to sell at some future date and a surveyor picks it up. But then there are indemnity insurance policies.

If you employ someone to do this, involving building regs can add a small amount of protection in validating the work and perhaps making the builders wary of crap work.
