ive been building an extension and have lots of old slabs, bricks and concrete blocks.
I was planning on laying in down to form part of a sub base for a patio.

People keep telling me il get voids etc if I use them ...... massive ball ache to clear as access limited. Surely if I lay it all flat next to each other and then fill gaps and 70mm top layer of type 1 it will compact just as good?
Opinions please??

You do need an inordinate amount of space to consume larger units of hard core, otherwise you will spend an eternity whacking the bejesus out of the high spots, for ever and a day. However, if you have comfortably 150mm - 200mm then crack on. Less than 100mm and you will struggle.

The critical element is to leave enough room for the finer granular material so that you can shape your falls.
