I'm thinking of laying a circle kit in the front garden. With this the plan is to plant a tree, take out the centre circle of the tree kit and lay the rest around the tree.

However, I'm bit concerned about root uplift moving the newly laid paving slabs. Is there a way to avoid this? Is this unavoidable?

I'm looking at Acers - does anyone know how big/obtrusive their root balls are?

Any help much appreciated.

really does depend on what type of acer you are planting and how big it is already. The smaller ornamental varieties wont cause a problem for quite a few years
