Hello everyone,

My wife and I were planning to add a patio to our garden this year, but have encountered a slight problem. We removed the previous residents rotten timber conservatory which sat on a solid concrete base. We were hoping to use this base as a solid footing for either paving slabs or some "higher quality" block paving. However the top of the concrete sits only 120mm below DPC and if we are to add anything on top of this it would significantly reduce this dimension.

Is there a legal limit or recommended dimension that you should always keep below for DPC?

Also has anyone got any other suggestions other than to break the concrete and dig out deeper?

The surface of any paving etc should be 6 inches/ 150mm below the dpc level. Of course this is not any kind of legal limit but it would definately be picked up by a surveyor should you want to sell.

People have been known to cut a channel along the wall and fill it with gravel but frankly it's a last resort to deal with problems in existing paving and certainly not something to aim for when starting a job.

Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear. :(

As sai, not a legal issue (unless on new build) but a good idea to observe the 150mm guidline.

So, dig out that concrete or install a linear drain and take the water somewhere (last resort)
