I've bought a PC3200 1GB memory dimm for my Asrock K7VT4A Pro based PC tower which has an Athlon 2500+ (Barton) CPU @ 333FSB.

The Asrock K7VT4A Pro manual states for PC3200 memory, only one slot can be use at up to 1GB capacity.

However with the PC3200 installed, I ran CPUID which confirmed the memory was running as PC2700 (166MHz)

I also have an Intel P4 based machine which is happy running the PC3200 dimm as PC3200 (200MHz) as confirmed by CPUID.

Thanks for that Whyme

Since posting my question, I had the thought of looking in the BIOS which yes, is the latest version.

The memory frequency was set to Auto so I set it manually to DDR400 and I got the full memory speed - at least according to CPU-Z.

Unlike Gigabyte which is my favourite brand of MBoard, Asrock boards don't confirm memory speed when booting.
