Hi so I'm putting together a 6ft picnic bench, put I'm having a problem with measurements. Basically what I want is to be able to fold the seats up (for when it rains/photo 2) the problem I'm having is how far away does the edge of the first strip of wood have to be away from the coach bolt (A)? Any advice would be helpful

Simplest answer is to stack up some bricks or similar, place the seat on them and see how easy it is to get "in" - some seats are too close to the table so your arse is unsupported and it's like climbing into a cockpit

A good excuse to visit a couple of pubs for "research"
Measure from the seat edge to a plum line from the table edge

Stick a pencil in the bolt hole you made in that short piece of timber and tilt the seat up and down. The pencil will mark to the farthest you need to drill the hole out. Just allow a little more than the point marked by the pencil marking. Personally, I would not bother - just fix the seats in place. If the top gets wet, why worry about the seats?

I made mine, so I could tilt the whole bench up onto it's end, where it would safely balance with no risk of it falling back down.

I also fitted some large bolts into the ends of the legs, to lift the legs up out of the water. I just drilled holes and hammered large diameter steel bolts in.
